Chigozie Obioma was born in the very place where he chose to set his 2015 debut novel: Akure, Nigeria. There, he grew up with four sisters and seven brothers, two of whom inadvertently inspired this Cain-and-Abel-esque tale of prophecy and pollution.
Like the rapids of a toxic river, the four brothers at the center of this novel rush into and out of the visions of a local madman. Readers can’t help but get carried along.
